Ella, agradecida, le regala sus joyas envueltas en un pañuelo con las iniciales del novio, a quien le comunica la decisión de no seguir con esa aventura. La mendiga es asaltada y asesinada. Su cadáver aparece con el pañuelo de Álvaro, quien es sindicado del crimen. Pero él calla para proteger a Lina y está, por encima de su honor, confiesa la verdad. Álvaro, ya inocente, encuentra oro y termina felizmente casado con Lina.
Lina is a charming schoolgirl who, against the will of her father, Don Bernardo, is romantically involved with Álvaro, a bohemian young man squandering his fortune. They decide to flee from her father’s watchful eye, but at the train station, a beggar woman warns Lina of the serious mistake she is about to make. Grateful, Lina gives the woman her jewelry wrapped in a handkerchief bearing Álvaro’s initials and tells him she has decided not to go through with their plan. The beggar is later assaulted and murdered, and her body is found with the handkerchief, making Álvaro the prime suspect. He remains silent to protect Lina, but she ultimately confesses the truth, placing justice above her own reputation. Álvaro is cleared of the charges, discovers gold, and ends up happily married to Lina.
